Double Fine is releasing a computer hacking–themed puzzle game sometime in the first half of 2014, the developer announced.
Titled Hack ’n’ Slash, the puzzler sees players taking on the role of a young elf who uses computer hacking skills to cheat in a “classic action/adventure game” she’s playing. By Double Fine’s description, Hack ’n’ Slash will subvert “old-school gaming tropes with unique hacking mechanics” to allow players who don’t know the first thing about programming to experience something similar to hackers of actual old-school adventure titles.
Hack ’n’ Slash first came together during Double Fine’s Amnesia Fortnight 2012 game jam. After earning attention from the public, its development was lengthened to a two-week prototyping before obtaining funding through Indie Fund, Humble Bundle, Hemisphere Games, and more to be included as a two-title publishing arrangement along with the recently released Spacebase DF-9.
Hack ’n’ Slash is headed to Windows PC, Mac, and Linux in 2014.
