Dreamfall: The Longest Journey Finally Getting a Sequel

Posted on November 1, 2012 AT 05:59pm

When Dreamfall: The Longest Journey released in 2006 players were excited by the emergence of a new, well crafted adventure IP. The reception was such that a sequel was soon announced, a sequel that languished for a couple of years before being moved to “indefinite hold,” due to Funcom’s redirected focus on online games.

Fans will be happy to hear that the hold has been lifted and Dreamfall Chapters is back in pre-production. Today rights holder Funcom announced it had licensed the rights to a new company, Red Thread Games, from Longest Journey creator, Ragnar Tørnquist.

In an official statement, Funcom said, “Red Thread Games will independently fund and produce the sequel to Dreamfall, and has entered into a revenue sharing agreement with Funcom as part of the licensing deal. Funcom owns the intellectual property rights for The Longest Journey, but due to the company’s focus on and commitment to the development of online games, the decision was made to license the rights to Mr. Tørnquist and his new development studio.”

Those worried about how this will affect Tørnquist’s other game, the recently launched MMO The Secret World, can rest easy. According to Funcom, “The close working relationship between Funcom and Mr. Tørnquist will allow him to continue on as Creative Director of Funcom’s The Secret World, in parallel with putting together a team to develop Dreamfall Chapters.

Tørnquist for one seems thrilled at the proposition of getting back to the world he helped create. “I’m very excited to finally have the opportunity to continue the The Longest Journey saga,” Tørnquist said. “Ever since we ended Dreamfall on a nail-biting cliffhanger, players have been rightfully demanding a sequel, and my deal with Funcom will finally make that possible. I’m extremely grateful to Funcom for this unique and exciting opportunity, and I can’t wait to dive back into the universe I helped create more than a decade ago, and continue the story players have been waiting for these past six years.”

Expect more on Dreamfall Chapters in the coming weeks and months, and don’t be surprised if a new Kickstarter project dedicated to game pops up soon.

Marc Camron is pleased to finally get a little bit of time to enjoy new games this holiday season, even if Batman: Arkham Knight isn't one of them. The rest of the time will be spent getting ready for CES in Vegas, starting on January 5th. At least it should be warmer there than in Colorado.
