E3 2012: Miyamoto Talks Wii U Zelda, Knows Some Of You Disliked Skyward Sword
Posted on June 8, 2012 AT 05:45pm
Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto knows that some of you gave up on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and he’s determined to make the next game even better. That’s the kind of thing that’s driving the development of the unannounced-but-inevitable Zelda Wii U title, and Miyamoto’s “analysis and development” group want to make sure they get it right.
At least, that’s what he told Entertainment Weekly in an interview during E3 2012, answering a range of questions about Pikmin 3 (he started working on it two years ago), how the Wii U is going to stand up to the competition (it all rides on the WiiPad), and why he’s been watching more TV lately (there’s been more good adaptations of manga).
But the bulk of the interview rested on the subject of The Legend of Zelda, something that wasn’t present at E3 unless you count the Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest minigame in Nintendo Land. Despite the huge critical acclaim and sales numbers (over 3.18 million copies sold worldwide), he knows that the motion control still needs some work:
Yeah. With the last game, Skyward Sword, that was a game where you had motion control to use your weapons and a lot of different items, and I thought that was a lot of fun, but there were some people who weren’t able to do that or didn’t like it as much and stopped playing partway through it. So we’re in the phase where we’re looking back at what’s worked very well and what has been missing and how can we evolve it further.
If Miyamoto and his team are trying to pick and choose which elements of Skyward Sword to carry over to the Wii U sequel, I’d say keep the Beetle at all costs. Get rid of the dowsing feature and do something about the bombs, though.
