EA No Longer Intends to Pay Rights to Use Real Guns in Their Games

Electronic Arts will no longer pay for the rights to use real weapons in their games, president of Labels Frank Gibeau told Reuters.

“We’re telling a story and we have a point of view,” Gibeau told Rueters. “A book doesn’t pay for saying the word ‘Colt,’ for example.”

Rough translation? EA thinks that it’s unconstitutional—that paying for the rights to use real guns in games flies in the face of free speech.

To be clear, EA isn’t going to stop using real weapons in their games. they aren’t going to create fake brands that are similar to but not quite Heckler & Koch or Beretta—they’re simply taking a stance and refusing to pay for the rights.

Good for them? Expect more on this to rear its head sooner than later.
