EA Shuts Down Development of Free-to-Play Command & Conquer, Disbands Team

Posted on October 29, 2013 AT 11:43am

Development on the free-to-play Command & Conquer title due out later this year has been terminated and the team at developer Victory Games disbanded, the companies confirmed today.

“Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play,” reads a post on the official Command & Conquer website. “That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game. Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it’s about getting you the game you expect and deserve.”

According to the post, the direction in question was a shift from focus on the game’s campaign mode to an “economy-based, multiplayer experience.” As for money spent in this economy, Victory Games and Electronic Arts will be refunding all money spent by alpha participants.

“We believe that Command & Conquer is a powerful franchise with huge potential and a great history, and we are determined to get the best game made as soon as possible. To that end, we have already begun looking at a number of alternatives to get the game back on track. We look forward to sharing more news about the franchise as it develops.. Thank you again for your participation and support.”

As for the studio itself, now former Victory employees have confirmed on Twitter that the studio is being shut down and disbanded. An EA rep informed Polygon that they would “help these talented people find other opportunities within EA” where applicable.
