EA hasn’t hit that magical 1,000,000 number for Battlefield 3 Premium quite yet, but the publisher is nonetheless happy with the progress the paid service has made so far. All that remains to be seen is whether they’ll do it again.
USA Today‘s Game Hunters caught up with EA Games’ executive vice president Patrick Soderlund to talk about the company’s DLC plans for the franchise now that Battlefield 3 Premium has hit 800K paid subscribers. Anyone who signs up for it gets early access to the game’s DLC content, which includes in-game items and five expansion packs, for a one-time $49.99 buy-in rate.
Soderlund says that the surge has been extremely good, especially considering that Battlefield 3 Premium has only been available since E3 this year:
Soderlund says the initial response has topped EA’s expectations. “We are very pleased with the performance so far,” he says.
As for whether EA might adopt similar plans for their other games, it’s still too soon to tell. “We’re actually only two weeks into it, so it’s a little early to tell how this is going to pay off,” says Soderlund. “It certainly it looks very promising right now.
As USA Today notes, Soderlund is also in charge of other upcoming EA titles including Dead Space 3, Need For Speed, Crysis 3, and Medal of Honor: Warfighter.
It would be silly to think that a “premium” service would be attached to each of those games as well, but if Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Elite have proven anything, plenty of people will throw money at something with long-lived multiplayer content. But will people pay extra cash for a Medal of Honor subscription?
