EGM E3 Experiences: Vanillaware’s Latest Epic 2D Project, Dragon’s Crown

Posted on June 13, 2011 AT 03:43pm

In case you missed it, here are video, screenshots, artwork, and a few details for Dragon’s Crown, the amazing-looking new 2D action RPG for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

During Sonys E3 2011 press briefing, a video trailer showcasing a number of previously- and newly-revealed PSVita titles quickly flashed something that made many a heart stop: what looked to be a new project from Japanese developer Vanillaware. The game was later announced as Dragons Crown, an online-playable 4-player side-scrolling action RPG set for release on the PS3 and PSVita next spring by Ignition.

Vanillaware has become known as one of the top companies trying to keep 2D gaming alive, and the visually stunning art theyve created for Dragons Crown should look fantastic either in full HD on the PS3 or via the PSVitas OLED screen. Will the game play as good as it looks? While its still too early to have that question answered by hands-on experience, Dragons Crownoriginally conceived as a Dreamcast follow-up to Princess Crown on the Saturnis a project 13 years in the making for director George Kamitani. A project, by the way, that was inspired by two titles Kamitani had previously worked on: Capcoms Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom and Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara.

Games in this style are notoriously hard to get right, as gameplay and combat can easily end up boring or overbearing. George Kamitanis passion for the project gives me hope, however, as does his being a fan of genre examples such as Golden Axe and King of Dragon.
