Cover Story: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

We packed our bags, set a course, and sailed the high seas. What for? To meet with the development team working on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, the latest chapter in Ubisoft’s award-winning franchise. When all was said and done, we came away with eight scintillating pages of extended coverage.

Yo ho, Yo ho, A Pirate’s Life for the Creed! Were you one of the many people who fancied the sailing portions of Assassin’s Creed III? Ubisoft is gambling on the notion that you are, and have carefully constructed and expanded upon traversing the high seas. Our cover story reveals an in-depth look at the game’s all-new protagonist, Edward Kenway. We also blueprint Edward’s trusted vessel, a 60 meter long fortitude of flotation which is capable of carrying over 50 canons—talk about raw fire power. Considering the world within Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is 60 percent water, it’s good to know where you stand.

We also detail a handful of facts regarding real-life pirate’s of the Caribbean, and piece together historical events surrounding the swashbucklin’ timeline. Trust us, it may sound like a learning experience, but it’s a fun learning experience. We wouldn’t lie to you, would we?

 

The EGM Interview: David Cage

“Some things take time. If you shout and scream about them when people aren’t ready, you waste your time, you get people upset, and it doesn’t help anyone. My focus right now is to shout a little bit [less] and do things and see how things evolve—and if they evolve, great. If they don’t, I’ve done what I believe in.”

Quantic Dream studio head David Cage certainly has his work cut out for him on his latest project, Beyond: Two Souls—though you wouldn’t know from meeting him, as he remains humble, earnest, and unassuming. At least, that’s the man we found when we had the chance to sit down with him in Paris. We talked about everything from weaving interactive narratives, standing apart from the rest of the industry, and tackling some of gaming’s biggest challenges. However, our interview with Cage wasn’t all serious—as proven when he jokes about the existentialism of Wile E. Coyote in our Parting Shots section.

 

EGM Hotlist: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Tomb Raider

Every issue, EGM picks one game, and then goes behind the scenes to find ten details about it—and its developer—that you probably don’t know.

This time, we talked to Brian Horton, senior art director on Tomb Raider. Horton spills the beans on the inner workings of the development team, including the reason why they call themselves “Team Tanuki.” Here’s a little hint: it doesn’t have anything to do with the legendary Tanooki suit in Super Mario Bros. 3—though the answer may surprise you. Horton also delves into the team’s softball league where they take pride in whacking around, what else, balls. Horton then mentions the team has a heated rival—get this, it’s DreamWorks.

This month’s top 20 was especially grinding. After locking ourselves in a confined space, we deliberated. We fought. Some of us even cried. But in the end, we here at Electronic Gaming Monthly finally delivered our top 20 favorite game systems of all time.
