EGM Presents:
What We’re Playing This Weekend

Posted on March 16, 2012 AT 11:15am

Here’s what the EGM staff will be playing this weekend—now let us know what games you’ll be spending your weekend with!

Now that GDC is in the books, I’ve got some catching up to do. Thankfully, that means plunking down on the couch and cozying up to a host of titles on my 360 ‘till the cows come home…though I don’t really see too many cows ‘round these parts.

I Am Alive – I’ve been waiting on this one for years, and though I’m a bit curious how annoying the climbing mechanic will be in practice, the attitude and ambiance of this Ubisoft downladable adventure is right up my alley.

Binary Domain – While I can’t help but chuckle at how many games bite the whole “evil robots take over the world” routine, I can’t help but wonder if a Japanese studio can pull off the western vibe on a sci-fi title after suffering through the less-than-stellar Mindjack last year.

Armored Core V – Speaking of Japanese titles that raise interest and concern, I cannot wait to hop in some heavy metal and channel the spirit of Chromehounds with From Software’s latest round of robot revelry. Giddy up!

After having my gamer fortitude beaten into near submission by a bevy of RPGs over the past few months, I’m thrilled to be getting away from that genre and moving into some good ol’ fashioned hack ‘n’ slash swordplay this weekend.

The first title on my docket is one I have been waiting for with baited breath since the Nintendo 3DS first launched last year and that is finally the release of Kid Icarus: Uprising. It has been almost my entire life between Kid Icarus titles and so I look forward to waving my stylus around like it was Kid’s bow or sword.

After that, I’ll likely wander my way back over to my Xbox 360 for some Blades of Time action. I was intrigued enough by my time with it at San Diego ComicCon 2011 to want to take a more detailed look at it now that it’s finally released. Then again, it’s not a hard sell for me when you’re dealing with a half-naked hot chick with a giant sword and time manipulation powers. What can go wrong, right?

Spring is in the air, and it’s time to do spring-like things. This is why my wife will undoubtedly have me cleaning house if I let her. Fortunately, I have several game to play while swearing, “It’s for work, honest!”

Even though baseball doesn’t start for a couple of weeks, I have two new baseball games vying for my attention. I hope to log some hours on both MLB 12: The Show and MLB 2K12. It always takes a few play sessions before the cobwebs shake off and I can play respectably, so it’s important to get those hours in now, before the competition really starts.

And when not swinging a bat I’m going to have to spend some time swinging a club. A new year means a new Tiger Woods PGA Tour. Last year’s installment, which added the venerable Master’s Tournament, was the best golf game I ever played. I’m looking forward to seeing if EA can repeat its success. These days the digital links are bing much kinder to Tiger than the actual ones, so at least he has that to hang his cap on.

It’s once again time for a weekend of TERA, as the third closed beta test roles around—giving me a chance to carry on with my Archer, who’s currently at level 16. I’m enjoying the fast passed action that TERA brings compared to most MMOs—however, it does mean a lot more concentration is involved, and that’s not something I want to be doing during a weekend.

I’ll also be taking some time out to play Star Wars: The Old Republic, working on getting my Inquisitor up to level 50 so I can get that damn elusive White Lightsaber Crystal. It seems to have become a life goal of mine. Mass Effect 3 was on my “to play” list, but after all this talk of horrible endings I’ve kind of lost my drive for it. Hopefully I’ll be able to sit down at some point and complete the saga.

Due to being busy with going to GDC 2012, I didn’t have the chance to get into the final version of Silent Hill: Downpour before its launch. Well, now the game is here, and I have a bit more free time, so it’s time of me to take a trip back to America’s least-popular tourist spot. As a die-hard Silent Hill fan, I’m really, really picky about these games—so I want to see if all of the work put into finally giving us a “proper” HD Silent Hill ended up paying off.

Then, if I have any time after that, I might actually get in a bit of PC gaming—something I almost never, ever do. Like Matt, I want to jump into the beta test of TERA, as it’s reminding me of a beefed-up Phantasy Star Online (and I loved me some PSO). As well, Wakfu just opened to the public, and after getting a bit of an introduction to the game at GDC, I’m now super-curious to play it for myself.

Now that you know what we’re playing—what are YOU going to be playing this weekend? We’d love to know, so post a comment below and tell us what games will be giving you joy (or frustration) this weekend!
