EGM’s Top 25 of 2011
Part 5: #5 – #1

The top five. So sought after. And so fought over in the EGM conference room. The EGM crew actually came to fisticuffs whilst arguing the merits of their favorite games of the year, but only one could be crowned king. And so without further ado, here are the five best games of 2011.

#5: Rayman Origins

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier
Why It Made The List: If we might completely botch a classic hip-hop quote here: It seems like a lot of folks forgot about Ray. But this origin story—the series’ first proper console release in seven years—certainly put the limbless French wonder back on everyone’s radar, featuring amazing, ambitious platforming action through a virtual Saturday-morning cartoon with up to four players. — Andrew Fitch

#4: Gears of War 3

Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Developer: Epic Games
Why It Made The List: The third and final act in the Gears trilogy is the biggest and most epic of them all in terms of scale and content. An engaging, set-piece-orientated campaign adds another two players to the mix, meaning that four people can now enjoy the high-octane battle against the Locust and new Lambent threat. Horde 2.0 reinvigorates the wave gorefest with a new tower-defense twist, and an improved matchmaking system rounds off a fantastic entry. — Matthew Bennett

#3: Dark Souls

Publisher: Namco Bandai
Developer: From Software
Why It Made The List: Dark Souls may not be the most epic, the prettiest, or the most expansive game released this year or this generation—yet it’s one of the deepest and most satisfying. Dark Souls is a game that will not allow us to pass unless we better ourselves as players; it is, then, a game that richly rewards us when we do. — Eric L. Patterson

#2: Batman: Arkham City

Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Developer: Rocksteady Studios
Why It Made The List: An original story penned by longtime Batman writer Paul Dini captivated the comic-book community like no other game before it. With countless cameos by some of Batman’s best villains and allies capped off with a touching tribute to Mark Hamill’s 20-year-reign as the voice of the Joker, no game provided a more fitting service to its fanbase than this one. — Ray Carsillo

#1: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
Why It Made The List: While it had a lot of healthy competition from the titles below, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was an unquestionable milestone in an oft-neglected genre that raised the bar in nearly every category, offering endless hours of gameplay and exploration in a rich universe that placed a premium on letting you do things your way—a combination that ultimately earned our nod for Game of the Year. — Brandon Justice
