Eidos-Developed Final Fantasy Game Something Square Enix is Considering

Posted on October 28, 2013 AT 11:23am

Talk of a Final Fantasy title developed by one of Square Enix’s Western studios, such as Eidos, is the topic of internal discussion at the company, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII game design director Yuji Abe told OXM.

“Obviously, Square Enix bought out Eidos a number of years ago, and now we have direct access to American development teams,” Abe told OXM. “That’s certainly been discussed within the company, the possibility of say, Eidos or maybe someone else to look after or maybe take on the Final Fantasy series.

“And we obviously haven’t decided anything concrete, but if we find the right team of developers, the right people who really wanted to do it, and we had the right game, then yes, certainly we’d think about it.”

According to director Motomu Toriyama, the insular, stand-alone nature of the Final Fantasy franchise lends itself to this possibility. With the exceptions of Final Fantasy X-2 and more recently Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns, every Final Fantasy game is its own project handled by its own development team.

“The whole thing about the Final Fantasy series is that for every iteration, for every game we do, we have a very different game,” Toriyama added. “So the development team is also different every time, so that there’s different ideas and different concepts driving it. So obviously within that framework, having a very different type of team could work. So if we got hte right team of people, it could produce something very interesting in the end.”

The EGM crew teased the idea of a Western-developed Final Fantasy game in our most recent April Fools’ Day prank (issue #259), joking that it would be former BioWare founders Dr.s Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka’s first post-BioWare project. I jokingly suggested the idea because it’s something that, despite being a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, I wouldn’t mind seeing. And having just played Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut, I can honestly say that a Eidos-developed Final Fantasy might be a welcome treat.
