Elder Scrolls Online will justify monthly subscription fee with “significant” updates

Despite an increasing shift towards the free to play model in MMORPGs, Bethesda is confident that The Elder Scrolls Online will be able to justify its monthly subscription model with regular content updates.

Speaking with Gamespot, VP of marketing Pete Hines explained that the company’s long-term vision for the game includes a steady stream of significant additions to the game. “We feel pretty strongly about the support we’re going to have for the game and what you’re going to get for those dollars,” he said. “We’re also very confident in our ability to support it with content. And not content of the magnitude of, it’s a new month, here’s a new sword or here’s a funny hat—but content that is real and significant and it feels like regular and consistent DLC releases.”

That level of commitment, Hines said, wouldn’t be possible with a free-to-play model, as the developer wouldn’t be able to commit as much manpower to producing updates right out of the gate. “That just seems like a lesser game, and we’re not going to make a lesser game that might be more palatable,” he said. “We want to do the version that we think is the best game and the coolest experience. And that means putting a lot of people and a lot of content creators towards having stuff that comes our regularly; every four weeks, five weeks, six weeks. Big new stuff that you want to do.”

We’ll find out if that decision pays off for Bethesda rather soon, as The Elder Scrolls Online launches for Windows and OSX on April 4, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions following sometime in June.
