Emmy Winner Kirk Ellis Co-Writing The Order: 1886

Posted on October 18, 2013 AT 11:03am

Hollywood scribe Kirk Ellis will be co-writing the script for The Order: 1886, developer Ready at Dawn has announced.

Ellis is perhaps best know for writing and producing the 2008 HBO miniseries John Adams, for which he won the Emmy Award. According to creative director Ru Weerasuriya, he was chosen because the team wanted to find a writer who was well suited for the material and could bring a different perspective to the project.

“The funny thing about it is, he’s not a game guy,” Weerasuriya told Game Informer. “I think everybody would’ve expected us to go with a game scriptwriter, but my only request for a scriptwriter was, I cannot have a game person be there. We can bring the game side of it. I want him to bring something completely fresh, like something we might miss.”

Ellis’ work on a period piece like John Adams should make him a good fit for The Order‘s alt-history Victorian setting, but after looking at his IMDB profile, I’m personally hoping he incorporates themes from his earlier, more avant garde writing, like the 1988 action film Death Street USA or The Naked Truth, a movie about two men named Frank who cross-dress to escape the mafia. I imagine he’s probably just going to stick to John Adams, though.

The Order: 1886, a PlayStation 4 exclusive, is due out sometime in 2014.
