After almost 13 years Sony has decided to discontinue the PlayStation 2 in Japan, leaving the lovable black box to say good bye as it begins a well-earned retirement.
Famitsu reports that Sony Japan ceased shipping the PlayStation 2 to retailers on December 28, 2012. The console first launched on March 4, 2000, meaning it has been on shelves for almost 13 years. PlayStation 2 units are still being produced and sold in other territories, for now.
The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console of all time, with over 150 million units sold to date.
