Epic worried Gears of War 3 could be hurt by mobile gaming

Posted on July 25, 2011 AT 12:54pm

Epic president Mike Capps, in speaking to Industry Gamers, said that he sees the large amount of $0.99 apps for devices such as the iPhone as a threat to console gaming.

“I’m more worried that you can get a really good 99 cent game that occupies you for hours and hours on end and how that impacts $60 SKUs [like Gears],” Capps told Industry Gamers.

“I do worry about what it means for the next generation of console games. Are people really going to want to spend $60 on a game? I mean, we’re spending tens of millions of dollars making those games that they want to play… it’s not a sustainable business model. I’m not sure how it all ends up.”

Capps said that other features that consumers use instead of playing gaming also directly competes with their titles. One example he gave was Netflix, and how if Xbox 360 owners are using more of their free times to watch movies and TV shows via the service, they’re using less of their time to buy and play games like Shadow Complex.
