In an interview with Spanish website 3djeugos.com, SCE executive James Armstrong made some interesting comments about what “next generation” consoles might be like, in what seems to be a potential hint to Sony’s plans for the PS4.

Here are a few of the comments from Armstrong, translated by the folks over at NeoGAF:

How do you imagine the next-gen, better graphics, new controls or both?

“It’s difficult to say now. I do not think we are going to have a console with much better graphics than the ones PS3 offers now. I think the future will be in offering the best and most accessible experiences to consumers. The target will be to expand gaming population and to try to design games for women.”

“Lots of market research = women want a Playstation, but there aren’t games for them. Online and digital downloads have to evolve too. Don’t expect too much on next-gen graphics.”

Of course, these comments are merely ideas of what the next generation of game consoles could be like, and don’t instantly mean that the PS4 will be less powerful and focus more on casual games. What it could mean, however, is that Sony understands the current market, and where they went wrong with the PS3.

For both Sony and Microsoft, while their next consoles will no doubt be far more impressive graphically, the higher importance will be on making it easier for all types of gamers to be able to enjoy video games, and providing a bigger variety of titles to attract a wider audience.
