Scottish indie developer Ludometrics has announced Bodycheck, a action-heavy, medieval-inspired sports game that’s coming exclusively to the PlayStation Vita later this year.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Ludometrics studio head David Thompson described the title as both a “sports game for people who don’t necessarily like sports”  and one “with no rules against foul play, magic powers, and (explicit) corruption.” That’s not an exaggeration, either. Apparently you’ll be able to kill your opponents with lightning powers, bring your allies back from the dead, and bribe the referees to swing the match in your favor. I gotta say, if Peyton Manning could go all Emperor Palpatine on the Patriots defensive line, I’d probably watch a whole lot more football.

Bodycheck will also feature multiplayer, with support for up to four teams at once.

Thompson noted that this is his studio’s most ambitious project to date—and he’s really not kidding. Prior to this, Ludometrics have made a handful of iOS apps, a shoot-em-up for Ouya, and a pet shop management game. To belabor a sports metaphor, this looks like their shot at the big leagues.

Bodycheck is currently targeting a release in Q3 2014, which would put it out sometime between the beginning of July and the end of September.
