Far Cry 3 Will Give Players More Purpose

Posted on February 27, 2012 AT 06:34am

THE BUZZ: Far Cry 3 will allow even more freedom than its predecessors, yet will give players more purpose within the world.

Jamie Keen, Lead Game Designer, revealed that the team has learned from mistakes it made in Far Cry 2.

“The open world was cool, it was great, but it never quite comes to anything,” he said about the second title. ”It’s kind of left open and you just get a bit lost in it. We’re trying to make sure we don’t end up in that situation. It’s important that it has that sense of exploration, but it needs to be getting towards something.”

However, this doesn’t mean that player freedom will be sacrificed to give the game more focus.

“It’s important that you have that sense that you can do something because you want to. You’re always enabled by the game,” Keen explained. ”We don’t want you to feel like you’re being blocked by the world. If you want to travel quickly somewhere, you can do it. If you want to just drive around, you can do that too. If you want to jump off that cliff – you can do that too. We want it to be a situation where you say, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if… Oh! I can!’ It’s always about enabling. That’s really important for us.”

You can check out the game in action here.

EGM’s TAKE: The team has spent a lot of time and energy on ensuring that any issues from Far Cry 2 have been rectified. Not only have they managed to capture the vast open world, but also enabled players to find some kind of structure in the madness to prevent them from wondering around the island aimlessly. As long as all of these parts come together then Ubisoft will have a major hit on their hands.

Are you happy that more structure is being added to the game? Leave your thoughts below.
