It?s no secret that Star Wars: Battlefront is one of the most anticipated games of the year, but until E3 we didn?t know much about what we were getting ourselves into. After a hands-on demo at EA?s booth, we know how one of the most iconic missions in the Star Wars lore will play out. Let?s talk about Hoth.
Our demo featured a massive snow-laden landscape that hosted 40 players in a 20-on-20 showdown. The Rebel Alliance must destroy two AT-AT walkers heading toward a power generator on the planet, activating and protecting uplinks in order to call Y-Wings for bombing runs on the massive beasts. Only after a successful Y-Wing bomb drop are the AT-ATs vulnerable to normal weapons, so the Rebels must make those uplinks a top priority.
The Empire?s objective is a bit simpler: Protect the AT-AT at all costs as it trudges through the hostile landscape toward the generator objective. Empire players use AT-STs and other vehicles to push back the Rebel forces as they charge at their objective. The Empire must advance through four landmark checkpoints before claiming victory, but passing through each one allows them to respawn closer to the objective after a death.
The Battle of Hoth is a tug-of-war for territory with blaster fire blazing through the air and explosions everywhere. Each side of the fight has clear objectives to complete while making sure the other side isn?t succeeding at all. This battle feels like we?re playing a part of the original trilogy, and we can?t wait to see what other pieces of Star Wars cinematic history we?ll be playing through when the game launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on Nov. 17.
