The Final Fantasy VII remake may be a completely different genre than the original Final Fantasy VII.
Square Enix hasn’t had much to show on the game in recent months, but we’ve been able to glean some information from the company’s job postings. And, according to the most recent one, the Final Fantasy VII remake will be an “action game.”
“[We are hiring a 3D Computer Graphics designer to] carry the core of Final Fantasy VII Remake that is being remade as an action game,” part of the job description reads.
From what we’ve seen of the game so far, its battle system will indeed have more action than the original Final Fantasy VII, with a completely revamped battle system. However, just because the name of the genre has changed doesn’t necessarily meant that the game will be ditching all RPG elements. “Action game” could be the Japanese company’s shortening of what we’d call an “action RPG.” We’d bet that’s what’s going on here, but feel free to bookmark this article and mock us if they end up giving Cloud a rocket launcher or something.
Way back in 2015, producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that the old command battle system “might not work today,” and said that the team was “thinking hard about what kind of direction we can take [the remake’s battle system].” It seems that Square Enix may have finally decided on an action-oriented direction.
the Final Fantasy VII remake is currently in development for PlayStation 4.
