Final Fantasy XIII’s Lightning may return in future games as a ‘guest character’

Final Fantasy XIII’s “extremely popular” heroine Lightning may return in future Final Fantasy titles as a “guest character,” according to Lightning Returns director Motomu Toriyama.

“For Lightning, her story ends here in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, as this game is meant as a finale to this series. But we know that Lightning is an extremely popular character, even when compared to other Final Fantasy characters,” Toriyama told Siliconera.

“So there is a possibility that Lightning would appear in other future Final Fantasy titles, not as a protagonist, but as a guest character.”

Given the apparent popularity of Lightning, I wouldn’t be shocked to see her make an appearance in Kingdom Hearts III. Several characters from the Final Fantasy series have made appearances in the previous two Kingdom Hearts games including Tidus, Tifa, Cloud, Yuna, Rikku, Paine, and more.
