Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy XIV‘s next expansion, Stormblood, is launching in just over half a year, and it finally adds Red Mages to the game.

The news was revealed at the FFXIV Fan Festival held in Tokyo today, and came with a few teases of what we can expect to see as well as a handful of screenshots.

First up is the Red Mage, one of the most-asked for job classes since the game’s launch. The Red Mage will play as a hybrid melee and ranged magical DPS, fighting with a rapier as a primary weapon. According to the announcement, the class’s strength lies in chaining multiple spells to deal massive damage before following up with melee attacks, and “high-speed positioning” is key.

Additionally, there’s a new raid on the way, and it takes place in Ivalice (the world of Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy Tactics). Wrtten by Yasumi Matsuno, the director of those games, The Return to Ivalice will also feature brand new music by Nobuo Uematsu.

Finally, the expansion will also add swimming to the game. Players will be able to simply enter a body of water to begin swimming, with no loading times. Though you won’t be able to fight while swimming, screenshots show that you will be able to ride a chocobo underwater.

Stormblood‘s expansion is planned to release on June 20th. Pre-orders open up a lot earlier, starting on January 24th.
