THE BUZZ: Square-Enix is set to launch patch 1.21 for it’s struggling MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, the biggest update in the game’s history.
The patch includes numerous gameplay tweaks, changes, and bug fixes as well as several new pieces of content. The bulk of the update is the much requested job system which introduces seven classic Final Fantasy jobs, bringing with them new quests and monsters. The changes include: “Two new instanced raids, private player residences, a cutscene replay feature, Chocobo armor, a reworking of crowd control, adjustments to classes, revisions to how spell-casting works, changes to food and medicine effects and recipes.”
Patch 1.21 should be available towards the end of this month. The full change log can be viewed here.
EGM’s TAKE: The job system has been a requested feature ever since the game was first released, however now that Naoki Yoshida is in charge of development it appears that fans are finally getting what they want from the game. Yoshida has a mountain to climb if he is to claw back the respect that Final Fantasy XIV deserves, but sadly destroyed after a rocky release. This is just one phase in the grand path to update 2.0, a complete overhaul of the game’s engine, graphics and gameplay, which should place the game back up towards the top of the MMO tree.
