The launch of an MMORPG expansion always comes with a few servers issues, such as long queue times due to the additional stress of new and returning players. However, it appears that Square Enix has also had to deal with a DDoS attack following the launch of Final Fantasy XIV‘s Stormblood expansion.
According to Square Enix, the disconnection errors and login difficulties that players have experienced over the last few days have been caused by on ongoing DDoS attack from “an anonymous third-party.” A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is when a number of computers flood a game’s servers with thousands of requests every minute, crippling them.
“Our technical staff is taking every possible measure to address this issue but the attack is still continuing to take place by changing their methods at every moment,” a post explains. “We will continue to monitor and work on recovery from every possible angle.
“Due to this attack, our game servers, network equipment and network connection are being hit with heavy load at an extensive level, which is causing a disconnection from the game and login difficulties. Our technical staff is continuing to work on countermeasures for this issue.”
Square Enix stresses that this DDoS attack is aimed at flooding the servers and no character data or personal information is at risk of being exposed.
Final Fantasy XIV‘s Stormblood expansion launched in early access on PlayStation 4 and PC last week and officially launched yesterday, June 20th.
