Firaxis Games holding first ever Firaxicon next month

Posted on August 22, 2014 AT 11:14am

Civilization and XCOM: Enemy Unknown developer Firaxis Games has announced that they’ll be holding their very own community convention next month, in what’s sure to be the single largest gathering of hexagon enthusiasts ever.

The inaugural Firaxicon, as they’re calling it, will take place on September 27 on the studio’s home turf of Hunt Valley, Maryland, at the Cockeysville Embassy Suites. Happenings at the event include a chance to meet Sid Meier and other developers in person, early hands-on with Civilization: Beyond Earth, and tours of the Firaxis offices. There will also be a number of panels and presentations, including “An Evening with Side Meier,” which probably doesn’t involve as many candlelit glasses of champagne and bearskin rugs as I’m hoping it does.

The con will also play host to the first XCOM: Enemy Unknown invitational tournament, where skilled EU players will compete for The Golden Muton—presumably a trophy, rather than a full size gilded alien. Also probably not made of real gold.

Tickets are currently on sale over at EventBrite for $40. That might sound a bit steep, but Firaxicon should have one major advantage over flashier shows like PAX: Unlike most conventions, everyone at Firaxicon should be used to patiently waiting their turn.
