The Astronauts today released new footage of their upcoming supernatural horror game The Vanishing of Ethan Carter in the form of three animated GIFs.

The footage (seen below) was captured directly from the game itself using screen capture and recording program Fraps, then converted to GIF form. The first GIF shows a rocky path toward the beginning of the game, the second GIF shows a supernatural event involving a draisine (a rail vehicle used by railway service personnel), and the third GIF shows a cemetery environment explored later on in the game.

“A lot of what you see has been made using photogrammetric technology,” reads the blog post. “Rest assured we will be talking a whole lot more about it in January, but in short, we believe it’s the future for a lot of indie studios interested in photo-realistic worlds. The technology does not eliminate the need for artists and never will, but it allows faster acquisition of high quality in-game assets.”

The Astronauts was formed by the original founders of Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment developer People Can Fly in August 2012. The studio announced and revealed The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, described as something “inspired by the weird fiction stories and other tales of macabre of the early 20th century.” earlier this year in February. The title is slated to launch on Windows PC sometime 2014.
