Former BioWare Writer Involved in Kickstarter-Funded Sci-Fi RPG ‘Ambrov X’

Posted on September 5, 2013 AT 01:46pm

Dragon Age writer Jennifer Hepler, who recently left BioWare following a series of death threats (though not because of them), is now working on a “relationship-driven science fiction RPG” titled Ambrov X.

The project, which is being funded via Kickstarter with a $500,000 pledge goal, is an episodic role-playing game set within the Sime~Gen universe established through a series of short stories and novels by author Jacqueline Lichtenberg. According to the Kickstarter page, however, Hepler’s help won’t be guaranteed unless Amrbov X‘s funding reaches a $750,000 stretch goal.

“When [creative director] Aharon Cagle first approached me about Ambrov X, I was skeptical, as I’m sure most of you are,” Hepler wrote in a post on the project’s Kickstarter page. “Who was this little company making what looked to be a complete Mass Effect rip-off? And how were they possible going to manage that on a Kickstarter budget? But then we talked, and I read the source material, and I started thinking…What if when Ash/Kaidan turned against Shepard in the Citadel coup, Shepard’s own life literally depended on convincing them back to his side? What if Hawke could have used Anders’s addiction to her life-force to keep him from turning fully Vengeance? How much more intense could your relationship be with your follows if they were more than friends, more than romances—if they were both a part of your soul and the greatest threat to it?”

Ambrov X‘s character-driven focus is ultimately what appealed most to Hepler. The title requires players to pick a character that’s one of Sime~Gen’s two species (Sime or Gen) and explore a single relationship with the opposite species (which can be either male or female).

More details on the project can be found over at its KickStarter page. The pitch video (embedded below) contains pre-alpha prototype footage of the game. If funded, developer Loreful hopes to put the first episode out by June 2015.
