In a not too shocking twist, a meme turned Change.org petition has caused a wacky new feature to appear in Fortnite Battle Royale.
As pointed out by Reddit users, players of the multiplayer shooter can now thank the bus driver that brings them to the dropping zone where a match begins. It appears Epic Games added the gracious feature in the recent 5.30 update. To trigger it before skydiving, console players can press the down key on the D-pad, while PC users can hit B.
While players can’t be seen offering a wave of thanks to the mysterious driver, a message will display on the bottom left corner of the screen that confirms a player has “thanked the bus driver.” Check out Reddit user Flqmingg’s screenshot below to see how it plays out.
While the developer hasn’t officially said why the odd but fun option was added, it likely stemmed from an ongoing meme that transformed into a short-lived petition. According to GameSpot, in early June, Fortnite player Kody Keddie created a Change.org campaign asking for the ability to thank the driver of the iconic battle bus. The post has since been pulled, but the timing of the feature’s arrival is too suspect to ignore. Of course, players have been joking about the bus driver since the game’s launch, so the community fervor also likely helped Epic Games craft the concept.
As for something more mysterious, the next big event heading to Fortnite is already being teased. Recently, players noticed the rift in the sky that appeared with the conclusion of season five has started firing off purple lightning. It’s unclear what the strange weather effect will amount to, but it shouldn’t be too long before we get some answers.
Fortnite is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile.
