Update: The circumstances recently allowing PlayStation 4 players and Xbox One players to enjoy Fortnite together have since been addressed. Developer Epic Games confirmed earlier reports of players accessing cross-play between the two consoles, but this was apparently a technical error, as one Epic spokesperson commented “We had a configuration issue and it has now been corrected.”

Original Story: Fortnite seems to have forced peace between the two warring families of Microsoft and Sony by activating cross-play between the two platforms, despite Sony’s recent stance against it.

The cross-play was recently noticed by Reddit user PRE_-CISION-_, who identified an inconsistency in the handle of another player who killed them on the PlayStation 4 version Fortnite. The player name, zCypher Nine, caught PRE_-CISION-_’s attention because PSN names do not allow spaces. The Reddit user did a search for the player on the PSN with no luck, but after switching over to Xbox One, the gamertag came up immediately.

More evidence has since surfaced, confirming that cross-play between the platforms is possible, including one picture of a dad and his son playing together on an Xbox One and PS4 respectively.

While cross-play was previously available between PS4 and PC, as well as Xbox One and PC, Sony has made its position clear on cross-play between consoles. During E3 2017, Sony responded to the community’s demand for console cross-play in Rocket League, blaming its inability to connect the platforms on its responsibility to shareholders and young children. Microsoft responded, claiming that Sony’s attitude toward cross-play “doesn’t seem healthy for anyone.”

The lack of an official announcement by the publishers would suggest that Fortnite developer Epic Games took it upon itself to activate cross-play. Assuming Sony’s position has not yet changed, it remains to be seen how long it will stay active, but it serves as additional evidence that the feature is fully possible if Sony gets onboard.

In other Fornite news, the game’s Battle Royale update launches soon. The current public test of the mode seems to be where many of these cross-platform players are being discovered.
