Epic Games has released a new update for Fortnite that brings with it the start of Season 9.

Kicking things off is the introduction of a new Battle Pass for players to purchase that features more than 100 new rewards for to unlock, including new skins, emotes, back blings, and more. As usual, upon purchasing the pass, players will receive two new skins which can be leveled up by earning XP.

Also new for this season are the Neo Tilted and Mega Mall locations, as well as a new Slipstream system, which will quickly transport players around the map.

In addition to the above, Season 9 brings with it the Fortbytes system. Fortbytes are 100 collectible computer chips that are available to Battle Pass owners and are used to decrypt a hidden image. 18 Fortbytes are available at launch, with at least one new Fortbyte being added each day. Players can “unlock rewards and uncover the secrets of Season 9” by collecting them, according to the developer.

In terms of weapons, there’s a new Combat Shotgun on offer that holds 10 shells, fires nine pellets per shot, and is available in rare, epic, and legendary variants. This new addition replaces the Pump Shotgun, which has been removed from the game.

“Specifically when it comes to Pump Shotguns, they stand out significantly: they currently account for over 26% of eliminations in default playlists, with the next weapon type not even coming close,” Epic explains. “Rather than nerfing the Pump Shotgun to a point where it no longer lives up to its fantasy, our preference is to return it to the vault, giving us an opportunity to revisit the general balance of the item, while introducing a new shotgun.”

Epic has also removed Clingers, Buried Treasure, Poison Dart Trap, Scoped Revolver, Suppressed Assault Rifle, Thermal Assault Rifle, and Balloons in today’s update.

Moving onto Save the World, players get the new Wargames event. Wargames let players take on various Storm Shield simulations that will test their defenses against numerous challenges. In these simulations, players must defend their base for seven minutes, before defending a random amplifier for another seven minutes to earn rewards. Four simulations are available at launch, with plans to introduce more as the season progresses.

To help with Storm Shield Defenses, today’s update also introduces the Community Lookout program, which will let players choose to join ongoing Storm Shields and Wargames missions for a 20 percent XP bonus. Players can also now opt to “Wait for Assistance” in Storm Shield and Wargames, which will hold the start of the mission until another player joins.

Also included in this update for Save the World players are new Weekly Quest, an overhauled Alert system, changes to Twine Peaks missions, two new heroes, and a new weapon.

Fortnite is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.
