Frostbite 3, Unreal Engine 4 Not Designed for Wii U

Posted on March 30, 2013 AT 08:39am

During GDC, reps from EA and Epic both said, very plainly, that their respective proprietary engines do not support Wii U.

“We right now don’t have support for the Wii U in the Frostbite engine,” Battlefield executive producer Patrick Bach told Eurogamer. “We don’t want to back down from what we see as our low-spec machines.”

Those low-spec machines include Wii U and other current-gen consoles: PS3 and Xbox 360. Battlefield 4′s lead platform is PC, though it is confirmed for PS4 (and Xbox [Whatever]).

“It’s about, where do you put your focus? And the Wii U is not a part of our focus right now,” said Bach.

Epic vice-president Mark Rein, meanwhile, after showcasing the Infiltrator tech demo (which the header above is a screengrab from) at GDC, told Kotaku, “Our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That’s really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it’s powering some of the best games on the Wii U already.”

So, in short: Wii U is to PS4 and Xbox [Whatever] as Wii was to PS3 and Xbox 360. And, really, that’s unsurprising, since the Wii U is Nintendo only just now catching up to their “competitors.”
