The Game Critics Awards have announced their nominees for Best of E3 2018, and Anthem has brought home the most nominations of any playable game at E3.
BioWare’s Anthem led the pack with five nominations—Best of Show, Best Original Game, Best PC Game, Best Action Game, and Best Online Multiplayer. From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was nominated for four awards, including Best of Show and Best Original Game.
The other Best of Show nominees were Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac, the Resident Evil 2 remake, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Ubisoft was the publisher with the most nominations at 11 (down three from last year), while EA and Sony Interactive Entertainment both tied for second with 10. This is a major win for EA, which only had five nominations last year, and can mostly be attributed to Anthem and Battlefield V, which was nominated for Best PC Game, Best Action Game, and Best Online Multiplayer. Nintendo came away with 9 nominations.
In total, 56 games were nominated over 17 categories. To be eligible, games had to be “hands-on playable” to voting publications in the form of at least a five minute demo. This disqualified titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout 76, and The Last of Us Part II, all of which made huge splashes at E3 2018. However, non-playable titles are still eligible to win in three categories: Special Commendation for Graphics, Special Commendation for Sound, and Special Commendation for Innovation. We have a feeling Cyberpunk or The Last of Us Part II will take at least one of those awards.
The awards will be announced on Monday, July 2nd, so you have the entire weekend to place your best in Vegas. You can find the rest of the nominees on the GCA website.
