Games for Windows Live isn’t shutting down, says Microsoft

Posted on June 23, 2014 AT 04:42am

Despite several developers abandoning the service and rumors of the service shutting down on July 1, Microsoft has stated that Games for Windows Live will continue.

Last fall, Microsoft closed the service’s marketplace and since then developers have been moving over to Steamworks to manage matchmaking, user content, and achievements. The latest developer to make the switch was Twisted Pixel, who transferred management of Ms. Splosion Man from GFWL to Steamworks last week.

Back in August, Microsoft said on the support page for Age of Empires Online that the service would be discontinued on July 1, 2014. That section of the post was quickly removed, and nothing has been said of it since.

When questioned about the July 1 shutdown recently, Microsoft told Game Informer: “We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service. As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.”
