Gamescom 2012: Vita Firmware 1.80 Details Released

Posted on August 14, 2012 AT 12:16pm

As a part of the flood of news coming from Gamescom 2012, a list of what will be coming in the next major Vita firmware update was released online—and then quickly pulled down.

Here’s the original link, as it was provided directly on Sony’s European PlayStation Blog site. The firmware update is still mentioned on the blog, but visiting the link now, the information seems to have vanished. Thankfully, Andrefpvs over at NeoGAF grabbed the text from the page before it was pulled down, so here’s a rundown of what was posted up.

Updates in PS Vita System Software Update v1.80 (coming late August):

  • Cross Controller functions for games which support such features
  • Controls: Ability to control the home screen and some functions in key applications (Videos, Music) using buttons versus touch
  • Music: Playlists will now be supported (iTunes, M3U, and M3U8)
  • Web Browser: Reach touch pad can now be used for scrolling and zooming
  • Video: Playback speed control and repeat play options have been added
  • Photos: MPO format images can now be viewed (though 3D and multi-angle viewing are not supported)
  • Messaging: New layout enhancements
  • Messaging: You can now take photos and add them as attachments when writing group messages
  • Maps: Button has been added to switch between “Search for Location” and “Search for Directions”
  • Maps: Touching and holding on a location on the map will place a user flag
  • Near: App can now gather information from surrounding Wi-Fi access points without needing an internet connection, and update location data later based on that information
