GDC 2012: EGM Confirms Deadly Premonition Director’s Cut Is Coming, Hitting PS3 In The West
Posted on March 8, 2012 AT 02:07pm
While attending a post-mortem discussion for Harvest Moon by series creator Yasuhiro Wada a little over an hour ago, I thought I’d hear some interesting discussion about the game and how it came to exist. I certainly did hear that—but I also got an extra surprise.
Near the end of the conversation, Wada brought up his friend Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro, the designer of beloved cult hit Deadly Premonition. In talking about the game, Wada said that while it had found a fan base, it had had some legitimate issues—such as problems with the game’s user interface. He then—very causally—also mentioned that Swery was working on some new scenarios based around the game.
Wait, what?
Why would new content need to be made for Deadly Premonition at this point? It seemed like a very unusual side comment to make, but Wada suddenly had my full attention. He then mentioned that, of course, players outside of Japan had only received the Xbox 360 version of the game—but that Marvelous would be looking to fix this by releasing Deadly Premonition on the PS3 in the West.
While Wada went on to say that more information would possibly be coming out about all of this at E3, my mind was racing. Was this just the PS3 version of the game finally coming out in countries outside of Japan? Or had Wada sneakily announced a Deadly Premonition sequel?
So, I decided that instead of speculating on what he had meant, I’d just ask the man himself.
After the presentation was over, I patiently waited for my turn to get a moment with Wada. When that turn came around, I told him that I was a big fan of the Harvest Moon series (which I am), that I still loved the original the best (which I do), and then asked if I could ask him a question.
That sly announcement that had been made about Deadly Premonition: Was that in reference to the original game, or was he announced some sort of sequel?
For those who may be wanting a sequel, sorry to disappoint—that it is not. However, this announcement is still exciting, as Wada told me that he was talking about a Director’s Cut of Deadly Premonition that was currently being worked on. One, obviously, which will come with some amount of new content—but which could also bring with it other gameplay fixes and various tweaks.
While Wada didn’t specifically say that the game would also be coming to the Xbox 360, I’d place my bets on that being a given. As for what exactly this Director’s Cut will be, we’ll have to wait until E3 to know more. Won’t we, Zach?
