GDC 2012: Game Developers Choice Awards – The Winners

Posted on March 8, 2012 AT 01:49am

Tonight was the night for the Game Developers Choice Awards—awards picked not by the media, fans, or some shadowy organization somewhere, but by the development community itself. So, I imagine that for those who won, the award the received had an extra special meaning to it due to coming from a group of their peers.

Inter-spurced throughout the awards were a few Special Category awards (listed below), a selection of skits from Mega64 (which were hit and miss, much like the group themselves usually are), and a few other little surprises—included a pretty funny montage of photographs showing Double Fine’s Tim Schafer enjoying all of the money his company received thanks to Kickstarter.

As for the awards themselves, there were few real surprises, beyond—for me—Game of the Year. Portal 2 was sweeping the awards, so I thought it could be a real contented for that one as well. At the same time, if we were guessing who would get the award going by audience reaction, the definite favorite to win was actually Dark Souls. So, many were surprised to see Skyrim take it in the end.
