GDC survey shows game makers prefer developing on PS4, self-publishing

Posted on February 18, 2014 AT 01:52pm

According to a Game Developers Conference poll conducted during GDC 2013, industry trends show a preference for developing on PS4 and self-publishing.

Twenty percent of the developers surveyed said their next game would release on PS4, while 17 percent said Xbox One. Only four percent reported intentions to release their next game on Wii U. Of the developers polled, 14 percent are actively developing a game for PS4, 12 percent for Xbox One, and—again—four percent said Wii U.

The GDC organizers also report that 64 percent of those surveyed prefer to self-publish their projects and are currently not working with a publisher. Only 19 percent are inclined to work with a publisher, and of those 17 percent work at a publisher.

Self-funding, however, through either existing company funds or personal funds, remains the dominant form of funding. Only 11 percent of those surveyed turned to crowdfunding, such as through Kickstarter or Indiegogo.
