Gearbox is ready to start work on the next entry in the Borderlands franchise, according to CEO Randy Pitchford.

During a panel at PAX South yesterday, Pitchford revealed that Gearbox is now expanding its team to work on “the next Borderlands.” Pitchford added that the game is not currently in development, but the team is ready to start.

“We want to think about the future and we want to think about what the next Borderlands is and we’re going to need some help,” he said during the panel (via IGN). “The fact is, we’re not working on a new Borderlands game, but we want to.

“There’s literally nothing to tell,” he added, “but we’re ready to start.”

Pitchford later took to Twitter to start recruiting for artists, designers, coders, producers, and other roles to help with development of the next Borderlands.

The fact that Gearbox is still hiring for the game, and Pitchford saying that the team is ready to start, suggests that it’s only in the very early stages of pre-production at best, which means that we probably won’t be seeing the game for a least a couple of years, if not longer.
