Recently, a build of Gears of War 3 was leaked and uploaded to torrent sites. Who was the evil scoundrel that leaked the game and put it up for all to download for free?

Actually, it seems that the source may very well have been… Microsoft. According to Mathieulh on Twitter, that leak of the recent build of the game most likely came from xbox.codify.com, a page Microsoft had up on Codify for software distribution.

While the page is now gone, the Google Cache for the page indeed shows that the full code for the game was up via a few different links from this page. While it isn’t 100% sure that this is indeed the source of the files, it is known that for at least some time the page was accessible by anybody and everybody.

Surprisingly, though, it is strange that the code would have been leaked from this page when right at the top it had the word “Confidential”. Obviously, just saying that should be enough to keep anybody from downloading it who shouldn’t be!
