Gears Of War: Judgment Switching Up Writing Staff, GOW3 Writer Not Involved

Posted on June 29, 2012 AT 12:24pm

Epic Games’ Gears of War series has been dogged throughout its entire run by terrible writing despite exciting run-and-gun combat and groundbreaking cover system mechanics. That may finally change with Gears of War: Judgement, as the developer is employing two new writers to replace sci-fi author Karen Traviss, who worked on Gears of War 3.

Traviss’ body of work includes several Gears of War books, in addition to many Star Wars novels, Halo: Glasslands, and her own original “Wess’har Wars” series.

According to Eurogamer, authors Tom Bissell and Rob Auten will be replacing Traviss on writing duties. Bissell’s most famously-known work is the critically acclaimed “Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter,” but he has also established a long career penning articles for publications like the New York Times, The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, Slate, The New Republic, and The Virginia Quarterly Review.

Rob Auten inspires less optimism, though, having worked as a consultant for Twentieth Century Fox on movies like James Cameron’s Avatar and two Aliens video games. Still, two heads are better than one, and in this case, the team sounds more than capable of writing something halfway decent for Baird and the Cole Train.
