Gears of War: Judgment Will Not Support Kinect

Gears of War fans can now breathe a sigh of relief as creator Cliff Bleszinski has confirmed that Gears of War: Judgment will not support Kinect in any form. Hurray!

Bleszinski said that he is a fan of the technology, but doesn’t see it as being a good fit for the upcoming prequel. ”We are not supporting Kinect in Gears Judgment,” he said in a recent interview with Games TM. ”I like Kinect, I’ve been a fan of it, but I don’t think it has been fully realized as far as the potential of the device. Dance Central 3 looks great and all, but I’m curious how the ‘core’ games will work out.”

Kinect has its place in gaming, titles like Dance Central and Kinect Sports have proved that, however it has no place in core franchises, other than a throwaway addition to put a bullet point on the box. It just looks awkward and shoehorned in when developers try to add the tech to “core” titles. Take Mass Effect for example, Microsoft trumpeted the addition of Kinect for conversations and squad tactics, but many fans just saw it as a pointless addition, considering that it was easier to use the controller to perform these tasks.

Back in April, Epic announced that the mysterious Gears of War: Exile project had been shelved. It was rumored to be an on-rails shooter for Kinect.

Maybe there will be a place in “core” games for Kinect in the next-generation, but for the rest of this one I humbly request that you leave well alone. Gears of War: Judgment is due out early next year.

Does Kinect work well in “core” titles? Should developers stop trying to squeeze support in? Share your thoughts below.
