Metal Gear Solid

A Metal Gear fan has assembled a simple timeline that outlines the entire fictional history of the franchise.

The series is known for its convoluted and involved story, and because of its strange release schedule, with prequels and sequels being launched left and right—some canonical, others not—across many different platforms, it can get pretty hard to follow the story of the series. Luckily, Alex Camilleri, a developer at Kalopsia Games and huge fan of Metal Gear, has stepped in and built a straightforward timeline that explains all of the events in the game’s complex universe in simple English.

Spanning nearly a century of events that kicks off in 1918 and wraps up in 2014, the timeline is exhaustive but riddled with spoilers, so be wary if you’ve still got plans to play through the games you missed before Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain launches.

That game, potentially the last in the series, is due out for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on September 1st.
