Ghost Recon Online has been rebranded as Ghost Recon Phantoms and will arrive on Steam and Windows PC April 10, Ubisoft announced today.
According to producer Corey Facteau, the name change goes hand-in-hand with the game’s new look and new character classes, the ex-Ghosts calling themselves The Phantoms. Ubisoft says that Phantom sports new level design and lighting along with other graphical elements, not to mention slightly reworked gameplay so that Ghost Recon Phantoms is less of a “run-and-gun type of shooter” and more of a blend between firefights and “the incredible depth of teamwork and tactics found in MOBAs” (a growing trend in first-person shooters—borrowing ideas from multiplayer online battle arena games).
New features include smoke grenades and “Tactical Inserts,” which allow players to spawn alongside a teammate during “critical moments.”
Additional new features will be announced in two days, on Wednesday, March 19, when Ubisoft holds a live event on Ghost Recon Online’s Twitch channel. According to Facteau, information the company will be sharing will include new details on matchmaking and player customization.
