GlaDOS-Voiced Jaeger AI in Pacific Rim a ‘Wink’ to Portal
Posted on January 6, 2013 AT 08:25am

Perhaps you’ve seen the Pacific Rim trailer? If so, you undoubtedly noticed Ellen McLain’s distinctive GlaDOS voice. That’s because director Guillermo del Toro is a big fan of Portal, the Toronto Sun reports.
“I wanted very much to have her, because I’m a big Portal fan,” said del Toro. “But just as a wink. She’s not cake-obsessed. She’s not out to destroy humanity.”
The Sun also reports that del Toro did in fact go to Valve for permission to use McLain’s GlaDOS voice.
Honestly, I hate reporting stuff like this. It’s about as newsworthy as pointing out that Logan plays Gears of War in Veronica Mars. That is, it feels like desperate validation. “Look! Famous people from other industries play videogames! That means they matter!”
Don’t know about y’all, but I don’t need film, television, music, or books to validate the cultural value/imprint of videogames. That del Toro or someone involved in Pacific Rim likes Portal enough to include the nod is self-evident. Ellen McLain doesn’t really talk like that.
End rant.
Incase you haven’t seen it, here’s the Pacific Rim trailer. McLain/GlaDOS/the Jaeger AI shows up 54 seconds in.
