The April 2018 sales data from the NPD Group is in, and God of War has shattered several records.
According to the research from the NPD group, God of War was the best-selling PlayStation exclusive ever, boosting Sony up to be the month’s top-selling publisher.
In addition, those strong sales contributed to another impressive overall record for Sony in April 2018: the highest software sales by a single platform in a month, judged by total dollars spent. Previously, that record had been held by the Xbox 360 in April 2008, when Grand Theft Auto IV launched and games like Assassin’s Creed were still selling well. The PS4’s new record is an all-time high since the NPD group first began tracking in 1995.
All this is in addition to the game becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive, an accolade that was awarded to God of War shortly after launch.
While PlayStation 4 sales earned the most money, Nintendo also held its ground, with the Neon Red/Blue Joy Con becoming the leading hardware item in terms of units sold.
Naturally, God of War was the best selling game of the month, though Far Cry 5 followed it in second place. The Nintendo Labo Variety Kit also debuted as the fourth-best-selling “game,” with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze following up in fifth place.
Overall, things are looking good for the games industry, with hardware spending increasing by 14 percent year to date. The full statistics can be found from the NPD Group.
