God of War got a new gameplay trailer during E3 2017, providing fans a much clearer idea of what to expect from Kratos’ next adventure.
In the realm of combat, numerous gameplay mechanics are featured throughout the trailer. A new shield weapon can be seen halfway through the trailer, which Kratos uses both defensively and offensively as he bashes enemies around the environment. His trusty ax can be used in conjunction with other weapons, either up-close-and-personal or thrown as a returning projectile.
Kratos’ son joins in the fray in the same scene as he jumps on an enemie’s back to stun them, confirming some of the boy’s functionality in combat. Later on in the trailer, he also unleashes an electrical shock with his bow, amplifying Kratos’ subsequent attack as one of presumably several ways Kratos’ son can help take down enemies.
Several narrative hints are scattered throughout the trailer, but their short and erratic appearances can make establishing content difficult. A woman shows up a couple times in cinematics, whom we believe to be the boy’s son, but we have yet to learn her significance, or why Kratos is bringing his son on this dangerous adventure. A number of enemies the player will face on the journey are debuted in the trailer, one of which is the massive World Serpent, who Kratos’ son can seemingly communicate with, alluding to the boy’s significance.
God of War is launching sometime in early 2018, exclusively on PlayStation 4.
