A member of the Polycount forums has recreated Half-Life 2’s City 17 using the Unreal Development Kit (Unreal Engine 3).

Forum user “Logithx” published the screenshots (below) showing off the visual upgrade. He notes that there is still a lot of stuff to do in this recreation, such as the exterior, the interiors of the trains, and various props need adding. The creator also mentioned plans to convert the project to Unreal Engine 4 in the future.

“I’m working every day to port this to the new Unreal Engine 4 but as I mentioned in my original post there’s lots of work that was unfinished not to mention that I have to redo all the materials and many textures because of the awesome physically-based shading in Unreal Engine 4,” he wrote. “There’s a lot more content in this level that I haven’t shown yet and I probably won’t until it’s all finished.

“Yes, everything was rebuilt from the ground up, including high-poly’s and all the stuff that goes with,” the creator added. “No original Half-Life 2 material will be used (except for Dr.Breen’s face and the Combine insignia).”
