Halo Producer Says Series Could Work In Other Genres, Mediums, Platforms

With the except of Halo Wars, Halo has always stood as one of the top names in the first-person shooter genre. According to Halo 4 executive producer Kiki Wolfkill, however, 343 Industries could take the franchise in some interesting new directions.

In an interview with UK outlet CVG, Wolfkill was asked if the team at 343 would ever consider exploring different genres.

“Yeah,” answered Wolfkill. “I think we’d look at what the most interesting genre, medium, delivery mechanism is to tell a certain story, and if it moves the IP forward in an interesting way we’ll do it.”

She also noted that while the first-person shooter genre “is the best place to tell one kind of story,” projects like Forward Unto Dawn show that Halo can exist in other forms and be delivered via other platforms.

“Forward Unto Dawn allowed us to explore characters a little bit differently and tell a different kind of story – and that is interesting to us,” Wolfkill noted. “We want Halo as a universe to grow and evolve and be a Star Wars… all the good parts about Star Wars! (Laughs)”

It may be a bit heretical to say, but I’ve always enjoyed the segments where Halo switches temporarily to being a third-person shooter more than its typical first-person shooter gameplay style. So, I’d be curious to see a future Halo game make that switch. Of course, there are then plenty of other genre I could see fitting into the Halo universe—how about a collaboration with Square Enix to make an epic Halo turn-based RPG? Master Chief might look good with a few buckles and zippers on his Spartan armor.
