343 Industries has officially announced Halo: Spartan Assault, a twin-stick top-down shooter for Windows 8 devices.
The spin-off is set between Halo 3 and 4, and is being co-developed by 343 and Vanguard Games. Spartan Assault will run on any device which supports Windows 8, including the Surface tablet, Windows Phones, and PC. The game is due out July 2013 and will cost $6.99. Spartan Assault also supports play across multiple platforms, allowing you to start on PC and then continue on your phone, etc.
The game is set after Halo 3 and revolves around Commander Sarah Palmer’s rise from ODST to Spartan. The game’s 25 missions are UNSC Infinity simulations of past battles against the Covenant and should take you around 2 hours to complete the lot. Players can customize their loadout, toggle skulls, earn experience and achievements, and even earn emblems for Halo 4.
Of course there are some in-app purchases such as boosters, unique weapons, and new abilities, however these can also be earned by grinding in-game. You can check out a trailer and some screenshots below.
