Halo: The Master Chief Collection announced, includes access to Halo 5 multiplayer beta in December

Posted on June 9, 2014 AT 11:32am

Microsoft and 343 Industries officially announced Halo: The Master Chief Collection, a new Xbox One release that beings together all four core Halo releases, today during the publisher’s E3 2014 press conference.

While rumors had been swirling around the Internet about the possibility of an “Anniversary Edition” of Halo 2, fans will instead get the content of all four games on Microsoft’s latest console. Even better, the games aren’t disconnected experiences—the content from all four releases have been combined together into one giant game. On the single-player side, this means you’ll be able to access any Halo content however you want. For example, you can go back and play the original Halo 2 as a singular experience, you can play through all four as one gigantic adventure, or you can even pick specialized playlists, such as one that lets you run through all of the Warthog missions across all four games.

As for multiplayer, because all four games are combined together, you’ll have one, all-encompassing matchmaking system in which matches can access maps and game types from every Halo release. Which map you choose determines how the overall gameplay behaves. Pick a Halo 4 map, for instance, and the match will feel as it did in the original Halo 4.

As Halo 2 is the only mainline Halo at this point to never have received an Xbox 360 release, 343 put concentrated effort into bringing the game’s visuals and engine up to snuff for the Xbox One, though all four Halo entries will run in full 1080p at 60 frames per second.

The Master Chief Collection will also contain the debut of the Ridley Scott-produced, Sergio Mimica-Gezzan directed digital feature Halo: Nightfall, which will introduce a new character central to Halo 5: Guardians.

Fans eagerly awaiting Halo 5 can also get their first taste of the sequel by purchasing The Master Chief Collection, which will give access to a Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta in December.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection will launch on Xbox One November 11.
